Firewall: A firewall is one essential part of securing your computer from hackers. A good firewall will close open ports(=doors). I recommend ZoneAlarm (Windows98 support no longer provided).
AntiVirus: Try Antivir from Avira GmbH
AntiSpyware: Very robust anti-spyware from Spybot.
Browser: Firefox 2.0 (5.6 MB download) is now available. Along with the extensions available, it is much more user-friendly than Internet Explorer.
Antivirus from Norton: Free download of Norton Antivirus Trial with the GooglePack Software
